TML Spotlight:Claudia Flotte & Lua Bash

Claudia Flotte’s Lua Bash Balloon Creations and More is well on its way to becoming San Antonio’s one stop party shop. With a focus on designing bright, beautiful, colorful decorations, Lua Bash has rapidly starting booking parties, grand openings, and other events for people and businesses around town. Through meticulous development, tremendous attention to detail and a full heart evident in every installation, Lua Bash has brought joy to many and continues to make its presence felt around the city – from summer events at The Pearl and grand openings, to birthday parties and graduations.

And though one of its key components is its diligent planning, Lua Bash itself didn’t go through such a rigorous process to launch. It literally happened from one day to the next.

“It all started with a bridal shower for one of my friends,” said Claudia. “I helped decorate and I really wanted to do something special for her, and I couldn’t find anywhere in San Antonio, not one person, that did the balloon garlands I had seen on social media. So I decided to do it myself.”

Though these words might seem recurrent and conversational, they serve as a starter guide to any young entrepreneur who’s undecided about starting a business these days. Or for anyone trying to do anything, for that matter. It encompassed the first rule of business school – identify a problem.  It screams Nike’s coined slogan – Just Do it. And it adds a special touch that personifies Lua Bash itself – do something special.

And so instead of living and dying as an idea, instead of Claudia simply accepting there were no vendors in town for what she was looking for, instead of skipping to the next part of her social feed or shrugging her shoulders and moving on, this idea blossomed into a business that led her to leave her job and focus solely on her passion.

We had a chance to speak to Claudia about her career, her business, what makes Lua Bash successful, and how San Antonio has contributed to its growth.

Texas MediaLink: Why do you love San Antonio?

Claudia: San Antonio brings so much life, the people are so amazing, so diversified, so bright, that I love being part of this community and I don’t see myself going anywhere else.

Texas MediaLink: Why did you start Lua Bash?

Claudia: I started my business as a mistake and at the same time not. I’m a business professional and I needed a creative outlet in my life. And I’ve always loved decorating for parties. I have a lot of friends who have a lot of celebrations and milestones that we’re reaching. And in particular, there was a bridal shower coming up that I wanted to help decor and make it really special for my friend. I had seen some amazing balloon garlands on social media decorating a dessert table and I couldn’t find a single person in SA that made something like that. So I rolled up my sleeves and I did it myself, and that’s how it all got started.

Texas MediaLink: How is Lua Bash unique?

Claudia: Lua Bash is unique in the sense that I pour my heart, my passion, and my personality into every installation and every balloon creation that I make. I like being bubbly and fun and treating every single installation as if it was my own party, my own birthday, or my own baby shower. So that’s really what I think has helped me be successful.

Texas MediaLink: What is the best thing about what you do?

Claudia: The best thing about what I do is seeing people’s reactions as they walk through the door and see one of my installations. I love hearing the “Wow, look at those balloons!” Or “Mom, look at that big balloon over there!” It’s really fun bringing joy to people’s lives, that’s the best thing about my job.

Texas MediaLink: What has been the best experience you’ve had in your career?

Claudia: The best experience that I’ve in my career has been being part of SoundCream Airstream on Wednesday nights during the summer at The Pearl. Usually my installations are for private events. So I install, I take my picture, and I say goodbye to my balloons. But with SoundCream Airstream I was able to be creative, and install it, take my time, and then grab a picnic blanket, invite my friends over and really enjoy the night of dancing, and hanging out with my friends and seeing how people interacted with my installation.

Texas MediaLink: What makes you and Lua Bash successful?

Claudia: When my clients are successful in their parties, I feel like I’m successful at my parties. I like to pay a lot of attention to detail, I like to install and have enough time before the party starts to really take a step back and look at my creation and make sure that I didn’t leave any holes here, or if it’s in the hallway that people are not gonna be bumping into my balloons. So really just taking into account what the party is gonna be like and the atmosphere and paying attention to those little details so that we really stand out and have a successful party.

Texas MediaLink: What makes San Antonio unique?

Claudia: San Antonio is family. For a small business or an entrepreneur in San Antonio either just starting out or already established for some time, it’s really a place that is welcoming and has a lot of outlets for you to reach out and network with.

Texas MediaLink: What advice do you have for entrepreneurs in San Antonio?

Claudia: My advice to small businesses and entrepreneurs in San Antonio is to really go out there and network. There are tons of groups that you could reach out to, mix network and have mixers with, and really ask your questions. I also recommend and highly advice to be a helping hand to other entrepreneurs and small businesses as well. You’ll gain experience, you’ll meet people, you’ll get face to face conversations with clients hopefully, and you’ll just really broaden your network and your resources when you are helpful as well.
